Business Success 101: Identify Talent In Your Team

Published by: Marisa Wiman | 2 July, 2017

If you really want to grow your business while also freeing yourself from doing everything, hire talent and not staff. Observe your people and look for your talent and then identify your staff. The secret is to capitalise on your talent. But how can you identify which is which?

Passion matters

People who are considered as “talent” operate in a zone called passion. When they go to work they are actually not working, they are self-actualising, they are feeding their souls. This is the main reason why they do not care coming to the office an hour earlier than the rest and go home an hour later than everybody.

They simply love what they do. They take breaks only when they really need it. Often times they work through lunch breaks. They are unstoppable, always seeking to make things better and continually challenging the status-quo.

Passion drives performance

The good news is passion drives performance. A talent do not care much about how well they are doing at work – they just do! They even get surprised when they get awards and special distinctions. While companies are spending millions on employee motivation, talent are driven by intrinsic desires to be the best that they can be.

Passion also drives learning. People who are identified as talent are the ones who read more, ask more, interact more with their peers and superiors knowing this adds to their knowledge.

As learning is acquired, performance also increases and your business gets the most of the perks. You get to improve your bottom line!

Managing talent best

Believe it or not you can easily strangle the life out of your talent. This is the reason why you need to observe who in your team is a talent and who are just staff. Empower the people who are making strides in making your company better. Give them more freedom with their work, support them, coach them in areas where they need help, train them, build up their leadership skills, make sure you are equipping them to go up the ladder of success in your company.

Give your business and yourself a favour – hire talent. Find people who are passionate about their core competencies and who are in love with what you do as an organisation. If you want your business to grow and run on its own, you need talent more than just staff. You need someone who aches for your business too and those who love to solve the problems you are wrestling with in your business.
